Waist trainers underwent a resurgence in large part due to well-known reality TV stars. A waist trainer is a high-compression shaping garment like a girdle. It consists of tough fabric and hard fibers and is held tightly in place by strong fasteners like hooks, Velcro, and lacing.

This garment aims to provide a pulling action that will instantly modify the wearer’s waist and create a smaller figure. It often sculpts the body to an accentuated hourglass figure or a flat and trim waistline. While it can’t provide long-term results on its own, it can help you stay motivated and confident throughout your waist slimming journey.

However, this useful garment always goes through enormous pressure, the more it is used, which can affect its lifespan. High-quality waist trainers can cost a pretty talent. As such, you need to take care of your garments to get more years of use with increased performance and comfort level.

Manufacturers of waist trainers often provide instructions to help users properly maintain the shapewear. You can also follow the steps below to help you know how to keep your waist trainer at its best for a long time.

Break in your Waist Trainer

When you take care of your shaper from the beginning, you’ll be able to preserve it for long-term use. Start waist training by breaking in your corset for a couple of weeks before fully tightening it and wearing it for more than a couple of hours.

Breaking in your corset is the process of slowly breaking in your corset. It’s the same principle as breaking in a new pair of shoes. This allows the fabric’s steel bones to slowly mold to your shape and result in a longer-lasting, more comfortable corset.

The keys to properly breaking in your corset is the combination of incremental tightening and increasing wear time. This means you shouldn’t overtighten your waist trainer when you wear it for the first time.

Most people get tempted to tighten their trainer straight away, thinking that this will provide faster results. However, you will hurt yourself when pulling the laces too soon. This can also permanently damage the corset.

When you wear your waist trainer, tug on the laces only until it’s a snug fit. Check the fitting by inserting a finger or two under the top and bottom band of the corset. You should have no trouble in doing so if it fits.

Latex waist trainers don’t have laces but two sets of snaps at the front.  For latex waist trainers, start with the widest setting, which is most likely the first set of snaps. Move on to the tighter setting as you grow accustomed to the trainer.

At the same time, you should build up the time of wearing the waist trainer. Start with 1-2 hours a day for the first 2-3 days, and add an hour every three days. During this time, you should tighten your waist trainer for a tiny bit each day. After at least two weeks of breaking in, you should also be able to wear your waist trainer throughout the day.

 Wash it Properly

Since waist trainers are worn every day, you’d need to regularly wash your waist trainer to maintain proper hygiene. Waist trainers contain a lot of sweat and moisture, making them a breeding ground for bacteria. Cleaning your shapewear regularly is also vital to maintain its highest functionality as it will allow the materials to contract and prevent them from being stretched out.

However, it doesn’t mean you can chuck it in the washing machine and call it a day. Washing machines aren’t the ideal choice for most types of waist trainers. Waist trainers contain some steel bones, which could break in the wringing process while in your machine. The compression material such as latex or spandex might even melt after putting it in a washing machine.

Instead, gently hand wash it with a soft cloth and mild shampoo or baby shampoo in a bowl or basin with some warm water. Start by dipping the soft cloth in warm water and lathering it up with mild shampoo. Do not use detergents as they contain dyes, alcohol, bleach, or fragrances that could damage your garment.

Rub the cloth gently on the garment, then rinse it down with clean water and wipe it down. Make sure that it’s wiped thoroughly so that there is no soapy residue is left.

After wiping everything off, hang the waist trainer up to dry. Do not wring it, just let it drip dry on the line or drying rack, preferably in a well-ventilated area. If your waist trainer is made with latex, try not to leave it out in the sun to dry as it can lose its color if left in direct sunlight. Wait until the garment dries before wearing it again.

Proper Storage

Proper storage of your corset is another key component to ensure the longevity of the garment. Waist trainers don’t need to be placed in mothballs or hermetically sealed. However, you need to provide several things for proper storage. The busks should be fastened, the laces are tightened, and the garment itself is laid in a cool and dry place, away from direct sunlight.

Place your waist trainer flat in a drawer or a closet to avoid being exposed to light. It can also be hanged by pinning them to a hanger or draping them over a laundry line. Never roll up your waist trainer to ensure that it maintains its shape.

Do not Iron

Besides keeping your waist trainer safe and clean, another essential point in making your waist trainer last longer is to avoid ironing it. Waist trainers cannot be ironed, mostly if it’s made out of 100% natural latex. Placing hot Iron on natural latex can leave you with the half-dismantled remains of your shapewear.

Alternate Between Different Waist Trainers

As waist trainers need to be washed regularly, you will be forced to pause your waist training. Additionally, it can also cause your corset to break from the constant wash-wear cycle. Do not wear the same garment for more than two days in a row. Instead, rotate through your wardrobe with other waist trainers.

Waist trainers made of latex especially needs to rest to maintain their functionality. When you purchase a waist trainer, buy at least another one, and alternate between them so they won’t wear out too fast. This will give your corsets a chance to rest and provide you with different styles to accommodate how you feel from one day to the next.
